An Analysis of Bentonite-Cement Interaction and Evolution of Pore Water Chemistry

Oda, Chie; Honda, Akira; Sasaki, Ryoichi; Savage, D.*

Extended Abstractof International Workshop on Bentonite-Cement Interaction in Repository Environments, 7 Pages, 2004/04

The possible multiple scenarios of chemical-mineralogical evolution in Bentonite buffer were considered on the basis of the information of both experimental results and observations of natural systems. The range of variable chemical conditions according to each scenario was examined in terms of the potential for locally-attained chemical equilibrium and kinetics. These analyses have been intended to provide reasonable assumptions on simulations using chemistry-transport-hydrology coupling models that aims at estimating the possible evolution of hydraulic condition of bentonite in a TRU waste repository.

Development of MACBECE: Mechanical Analysis System Considering Chemical Transition of Bentonite-Based and Cement-Based Materials

Ito, Hiroyuki; Mihara, Morihiro;

Proceedings of International Workshop on Bentonite-Cement Interaction in Repository Environments, 7 Pages, 2004/00

This work aims at the development of mechanical analysis system which can calculate the deformation of cement-based and bentonite-based material in the repository environment. In this study, flow-through tests of cement paste were conducted in order to investigate the changes in mechanical/hydraulic properties reflected by chemical alterations. Various laboratory tests of bentonite were performed to examine these properties with the effect of cation exchange. The test results were also applied to the modeling of mechanical behavior. Finally, mechanical analysis system (MACBECE) was developed together with these relations and modeling. Long-term deformation and change of permeability distribution in the near-field were preliminary evaluated under the assumed chemical evolution.
